Her apocalyptic challenge was an EMP Blast, her location an airplane, her helpful item was some rubber tubing, and her untimely disability was that she was preggers!
How did you first hear about the 2013 Wicked Women Writer Challenge?
I participated in the 2011 and 2012 rounds of the competition. How I came upon the contest originally is a long and convoluted story. I like to listen to podcast novels on podiobooks.com and came across a wonderful historical fantasy called “The Fox” by Arlene Radasky. I wanted to let her know how much I liked her story so I tracked her down on Facebook to send her a message. We got to chatting, and when she found out I wrote horror short stories, she invited me to participate in that year’s WWW Challenge. I came up with “Rats!” one of the stranger pieces of fiction I’ve written to date. But it was a lot of fun, and I’ve stuck with the challenge, which has gotten easier with practice.
What drew you into the fun of this challenge?
I enjoy participate in “women in horror”-themed projects. It’s a great way to promote female input in the genre. I also like a proper challenge and having random things thrown at you that must have a solid presence in the story makes this competition a true challenge.
The Norns were pretty challenging this year – what did you think as soon as your assignment came through? I loved how you used the rubber tubing to kill the pilot. That was ingenious!
Thanks. I was a little stumped at first – it was tough coming up with ideas. But I bounced some off of my family (my husband is a great help) and came up with the story that pulled everything together.
Have you recorded podcasts before? If so, where can we hear more from you?
I recorded “Rats!” for WWW 2011 and “Thanksgiving Special” for WWW 2012. I hope to eventually put out more of my own work narrated via podiobooks.com or a similar venue. Until then, however, my own narration has been limited to WWW. I do have a story “Little Sister” being podcast via Tales to Terrify, released on September 6, 2013, but the narration was provided by someone other than me.
What was the hardest part about your challenge? What did you like best? Did you learn something new about yourself while doing this challenge?
The hardest part was tying everything together in a believable story. I enjoyed my protagonist, a real tough cookie. I’m not a big fan of “damsel in distress” types. I learned I still have a lot to learn about podcasting (although I think I already knew that).
Tell us more about YOU, your past stories, books, other artwork or music, your current project, and what’s on deck in 2014?
I’ve got quite a bit out there via small press, including a couple of dozen short stories and six novels (soon to be seven), and I’ve experimented a little with self-publishing, but my real goals for the upcoming year is to hook myself a pro-rate sale, to get some decent feedback from bigger publishers in response to me submissions and to figure out an answer to that daunting question “how do I get more exposure for my writing?” I’ll keep pushing and maybe something will eventually give.
My current WIP is “Endeavor” the fifth book in my dystopian Fervor series. I’m closing in on the end of the first draft.
If you win 2013 Most Wicked, have you given any consideration to what your theme might be for when you hostess the 2014 Wicked Women Writer Challenge?
I’m a big fan of “Grim Reaper” tales. I think I’d like to work that in to the challenge somehow, if I were to win. That, or being a fan of food, I’d perhaps want to have a food theme – death my chocolate or the like. I have plenty of ideas.
